Dear Supporter
I hope you are well in these difficult times.
Monday 22nd of June is National Windrush Day , which is supposed to be a day to celebrate the contribution of the Windrush generation in Britain. However only 36 people have received compensation under the Windrush Compensation Scheme to date, some people are destitute and others have sadly died.
Last year, together with others, we organised a Windrush Day of Action on Windrush Day with direct actions in cities across the UK.
Hubert Howard, one of the many Windrush Generation people who has experienced horrendous injustice, came to one of our London organising meetings and to our London banner drop over Westminster Bridge as part of the Day of Action and a few months later he sadly passed away having received no apology and no compensation.
Windrush victim dies without compensation
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic the long awaited Windrush Lessons Learned review conducted by Wendy Williams was finly published.
The report fell short of stating that there was institutional racism in the Home Office but did state there was institutional ignorance and thoughtlessness towards race. The recommendations are yet to be implemented although EHRC has announced that it will conduct an investigation into whether the Home Office complied with equality law when implementing hostile immigration measures on the Windrush generation and their descendants.
It's not acceptable for the government to express empty words about the contribution of Caribbean people to the UK whilst failing to address the continuing injustice faced by the Windrush Generation and their descendants.
To highlight this injustice and to mark the ten year anniversary of BARAC UK we are holding an event on the eve of Windrush Day, this Sunday, 21st of June, where we will be launching a new film about the Windrush Scandal, the people impacted and those, including ourselves, who have been campaigning for justice. The film is made by documentary film maker Jean - Marc Aka-Kadjo who has worked with us over the past 2 years. We will be discussing the film, showing segments of it, looking back at a decade of BARAC campaigning for race equality justice and at current campaigns and movements including Black Lives Matter, the disproportionate number of BAME people dying from Coronavirus and tackling the legacies of enslavement and colonialism which allow institutional racism to thrive.
After the event we will live stream the full length documentary on Facebook.
We invite you to join us.
