The Issue

The Supreme Court is hearing a plea to allow high and very high power cables, pass through the reserved habitats of the endangered birds of India in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The “pleaders” have given the reason that the cost of putting all those cables underground is very high, also added that those cables are carrying electricity generated from solar and wind power from that region, hence the court should allow it, as these are renewable energy and good for environment.
But this argument is so much flawed, as these cable are destroying the natural habitat of these large bird, changing the landscape, and bringing naked and dangerous high voltage cable in the skies.
Our argument is that, if one project is having such negative impact on the fauna now, how will it even be good for environment in future.

The other issue, of high underground cables costs, should not stop any authority, as most of these projects have a long term view of 50 to 100 years, during which the cost will certainly be recovered.

If the Supreme Court doesn’t stop this now, the already endangered and countable number of these Birds and many other ones, will be gone forever within few years.

We request the courts as well as the government to consider this petition and put all the cables underground.
