It is important to remind our leadership that Tonga is a signatory to "1972 World Heritage Convention" and the "2003 Convention for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage". We have an obligation to safeguard Tonga's cultural heritage. Two sites are currently on Tonga's "Tentative List" for UNESCO world heritage but these have yet to be inscribed (the Ancient Capitals and Lapita sites). The Popua Sia and other significant Heritage sites have yet to make it to this Tentative List or Inscription and which are also under threat from Climate Change. The Pacific is under-represented overall in the UNESCO heritage lists, yet our cultures are possibly more diverse and rich than any other Region. Tonga holds an undeniably unique position in the heritage of Polynesia as it was an expansive Maritime Empire. We must hold ourselves accountable to our own pasts, before they are erased.
