Prevent Youth Vaping in NZ - Plainer Packaging

The issue

In New Zealand specifically, vape culture in youth is very prevalent and popularized. The issue I am aiming to influence with this petition is the issue that many youth teenagers are able to get their hands on vaping easily and do not feel discouraged to quit it.

Many vape companies target younger teenagers as one of their target audiences with flavour and packaging. Since vaping is a huge problem for those who are underage, which may impact their health and liability in the future through addiction and other side-effects of vaping. In a study done in 2021 by the Asthma Foundation, the survey results reported that 26% students had said that they had vaped, with nearly 20% of students vaping daily or several times a day. The survey also showed that over half of those who were vaping were vaping at a more frequent rate and higher nicotine doses than in past years showing an uprise in vaping in youth.

By having packaging that is more plainer in nature and also encourages quitting such as showing images of the results of vaping and how to quit vaping and medical warnings. While the government has banned toys and cartoons from vape packaging this will not deter manufacturers from adding bright colours and patterns.

Another way to decrease the amount of vaping is to have vaping behind prescription for those who are looking to quit or suffering from nicotine addiction.

Youth vaping is a big issue in NZ and many teenagers across the country vape and I believe that it may become a bigger issue in the future.
