The Issue

The Pflugerville School Board will vote in May on a plan which would close Windermere Elementary School permanently in the Summer of 2027. While we understand that there is an $18 million budget deficit and that tough decisions must be made, closing Windermere is not the best way to save the district money.

-Of the 22 elementary schools in the district, it has the 16th highest operating cost per student and according to the Texas Education Agency, spending per student at Windermere is below the average of all elementary schools in the district, meaning closing other schools would save more money.

-Windermere is one of only six elementary schools projected to increase its enrollment over the next five years. Closing Windermere doesn't address declining enrollment when some schools are projected to see decreases of over 20%.

-Windermere has over 600 students enrolled while there are five schools with fewer than 400 enrolled.

-The average building capacity of PISD elementary schools is 66.8%. Windermere is at 67%. There are seven others below 60%.

-Windermere is 9th on STAAR growth rankings.

-The average percentage of students meeting STAAR guidelines for PISD elementary schools is 47%. Windermere is above that average. Eight schools have fewer than 40% of its students meeting STAAR criteria.

-Only 54% of PISD elementary schools received a B rating or higher from the state. Windermere was one of those schools. Six other schools received a C, two received a D, and two received an F.

-24% of Windermere's students are African-American, making it the third highest in the district. 42% of Windermere's students are Hispanic, making it the 12th highest in the district. 10% of Windermere's students are white, making it the 10th highest.

-The school district wants to close Windermere and send its students to worse performing schools.
