Prevent the Rise in Inheritance Tax

The Issue

Seeing my family struggle daily with the rising cost of living leaves me heartbroken and frustrated. It's not just the soaring prices of essentials but also the government's relentless pursuit to increase taxes on all fronts, including inheritance tax, which is affecting us profoundly.

David Cameron once promised, during his time as Prime Minister, to raise the inheritance tax threshold to £1 million—that promise was never fulfilled. Now, with the inheritance tax and stamp duty in their current forms, it's not hard to see why these are considered double taxes. People like us, who have paid taxes on our earnings all our lives, are now being taxed again on what remains of our hard-earned assets.

These taxes are not mere numbers on a balance sheet; they represent the sacrifices, hard work, and lifetime of efforts put into building homes and ensuring a better future for our families. It feels unjust and unfair that after a lifetime of toil, our loved ones are robbed of their inheritance by exorbitant taxes.

Inheritance tax just doesn’t affect the rich; anyone with an estate worth £325k is affected and by an estate it means any assets of value, I.e. cars, jewellery, antiques etc. are included in your estate.

In 2027 private pensions will also be factored in, which is outrageous. This tax affects ordinary hardworking people who have strived to and struggled to achieve and provide a better living standard for their families and to hopefully leave the fruits of their hard work to their children, and let’s face it the generations who are growing up will be finding it harder to get onto the property ladder as housing costs are increasing and this government will continue to find ways of making money from the taxpayers.

Taxes have already been paid, inheritance tax is daylight robbery and has been contentious for years with various governments making promises to raise the level and even abolish this obscene tax, the same goes for Stamp Duty a tax introduced in 1684 to help pay for the war with France and was supposed to last for 4 years and also used as a record of who owned what as at that time there were no records.

Inheritance tax will not affect me personally but l know many people who will be affected, people who bought their property many years ago have worked their whole lives, paid taxes, raised children, contributed to society etc. but when they pass on their sacrifices are being rewarded by government taking a large sum just because they can. It’s wrong.

We need to hold the government accountable to their past promises and push for a reevaluation of these tax policies. The aim should be to eliminate double taxation and lift the heavy burden that inheritance tax places on families already battling the rising cost of living.

Sign this petition to urge the government to fulfill their promise of increasing the inheritance tax threshold to £1 million, preserving family legacies and ensuring economic fairness for future generations.
