Hello Green Lake Sequoia supporter, We still have hope. SDCI proposes to replace Grace with two dinky shore pines, but we know that a large tree with a long life cannot be replaced by two small trees with short lives. Please help by sending an email to city officials. Link below or copy and paste. Thank you!

subject: SDCI is Violating the Tree Ordinance

SDCI Director Torgelson, City Council and Mayor Harrell,

SDCI's plan to replace the Green Lake Giant Sequoia with two shore pines violates Seattle's tree ordinance. The ordinance requires that replacement trees "will result, upon maturity, in canopy that is roughly proportional" to what was lost (SMC 25.11.090).

By measurements: Giant sequoias average 200 feet tall, whereas shore pines average 40 feet. Giant sequoias can live for hundreds of years, whereas shore pines average 50 years. Even though these species have similar canopy spreads, the vast differences in heights and canopy volume renders them completely unequal.

This tree is being removed for a driveway despite being completely healthy. These "replacement trees" will be gone in 50 years, while the sequoia could have continued to provide climate benefits hundreds of years into the future.

SDCI should be required to follow the tree ordinance, no matter the project owner.

Sincerely,
