Prevent the Removal of MPAL, the Beloved Gym Cat at Manurewa Pools and Leisure Centre

The issue

In January 2022, I experienced a life-altering event. A severe knee injury fractured my lateral tibial plateau in seven different places, requiring immediate surgery. This incident left me unable to walk for an entire year and had a profound impact on my mental health and overall well-being.

Upon recommendation from my local GP, I began working with a physiotherapist at the Manurewa Pools and Leisure Centre. My partner, already a member of this gym, had often spoken about MPAL - the gym cat who was more than just an animal; she was a source of comfort for many.

MPAL has become an integral part of our community here in Manurewa. It's not just about having a cat around; it's about what MPAL represents - resilience, companionship, and hope. For many people like me who are battling physical or mental health issues or simply trying to stay fit amidst their busy lives - MPAL is our silent cheerleader.

However, we've recently learned that the council plans to remove MPAL from our gym. This decision doesn't only affect me but also impacts hundreds of other gym members who have found solace in this furry friend's presence during their fitness journey.

Research shows that animals can significantly reduce stress levels (Mayo Clinic). In fact, they can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels while promoting social interaction and physical activity (CDC). Therefore removing MPAL could potentially have adverse effects on us all.

We urge the council to reconsider their decision based on these facts as well as numerous personal testimonies from members like myself who have benefited greatly from having MPAL around during our recovery process or regular fitness routines.

Please sign this petition to keep MPAL at the Manurewa Pools and Leisure Centre. Let's stand together for our beloved gym cat, a symbol of resilience and hope in our community.
