Growing up near Kaziranga, I have always been mesmerized by the beauty and diversity of its wildlife. It's not just a national treasure; it's a part of my identity, shaping my understanding and respect for nature. The recent proposal to shrink Kaziranga National Park's Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) from 10 km to a mere 1 km strikes at the heart of what makes this reserve so incredible.

Kaziranga is more than a Protected Area; it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned globally for its remarkable biodiversity. Home to the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well as tigers, elephants, and hundreds of bird species, this ecosystem supports an intricate web of life. Its lush forests, dynamic floodplains, and essential animal corridors play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance and safeguarding thousands of species. The proposal to reduce the ESZ could spell disaster for this fragile ecosystem.

Research consistently shows that shrinking buffer zones around such critical habitats can lead to increased human-wildlife conflict, poaching, illegal logging, and habitat loss. The current 10 km ESZ acts as a protective shield, permitting natural flora and fauna to thrive, away from harmful human activities. Reducing it to just 1 km would expose these vulnerable areas to greater risk, compromising not only flora and fauna but also our global commitments to protect biodiversity.

Moreover, Kaziranga’s floodplains are vital for water regulation and local climate stability, offering protection against natural disasters such as floods and droughts. Narrowing the ESZ will undermine these ecological functions, which affect not only wildlife but also the local communities whose livelihoods depend on a healthy environment.

We need to advocate for sustainable measures that effectively balance environmental protection with developmental needs. Alternatives exist, such as ecological zoning that includes community-managed reserves, leveraging eco-tourism, and promoting environmentally-friendly agriculture practices to mitigate human pressures on Kaziranga.

We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and retain the current 10 km Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga National Park to ensure the long-term conservation of one of the world's most significant natural areas.
