Prevent the JFF from Recruiting Mason Greenwood Facing Rape Allegations

The Issue

As a passionate supporter of the Jamaican national football team, I am dismayed and deeply troubled by the latest decision by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to consider recruiting former Manchester United player, Mason Greenwood. Despite his undeniable talent, Greenwood was recently arrested in January 2022 on very grave charges of rape and assault, with audio tapes released to the media corroborating the traumatic events. A lack of a cooperating witness led to the charges being unfortunately dismissed, but the shadow of the accusations still looms large over Greenwood's career.

Including a figure who has faced such serious charges paints an alarming picture of our football organization's values and its disregard towards women's safety. It is deeply concerning that someone who can potentially be a role model to Jamaica's future generations, is tainted by allegations of such a severe crime.

We are demanding that the Jamaica Football Federation reconsider their recruitment strategies, considering the moral and ethical implications rather than focusing solely on athletic prowess. We must not dismiss the severity of these accusations and should stand in solidarity with survivors everywhere by refusing to validate those who have been tainted by such allegations.

This petition is not only about Greenwood or our beloved national football team. It's about taking a stance against normalizing sexual violence, about reflecting on our values, and about being a society that respects and protects all of its members.

Please sign and share this petition to show the JFF that Jamaica stands against sexual violence, and will not tolerate it, regardless of a person's talent or celebrity status.
