My son, along with his friends, frequently uses the local Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) in Roslin during evenings and weekends. It has become a vital part of their social life and physical development. Unfortunately, there are plans to make this facility chargeable which would restrict its accessibility for many families.

The MUGA is not just a playground; it is a community hub that fosters camaraderie among our children. According to Sport UK regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of numerous health conditions including heart disease by up to 35% and depression by up to 30%. Making this facility chargeable could potentially deprive our children of these benefits.

Moreover, according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), around 20% of households in Scotland are living in relative poverty after housing costs. The imposition of charges on such an essential community resource will only exacerbate this issue.

We urge our local council not just to consider the financial implications but also take into account the social impact that making MUGA chargeable will have on our community. We believe that it should remain free for all residents so as not to exclude those who cannot afford it.
