Prevent the Destruction of Vital Bird Habitats at Maylands Lakes Islands

Prevent the Destruction of Vital Bird Habitats at Maylands Lakes Islands
The issue
For many of us sharing the love for the beautiful Maylands Lakes Islands, it's more than just a scenic spot. It's home, and not just for human residents. For years, these islands have served as one of only two nesting sites in Perth for the great cormorants, a bird species protected under wildlife laws. They, along with numerous other bird and animal species, coexist harmoniously in this biodiverse paradise. Yet, the city is planning on drastic vegetation pruning and elimination. Their intent is to decrease the vegetation to a height of 1 metre to rid the islands of our beloved cormorants. This action threatens not just the cormorants, but all life that thrives there.
Apart from the ecological impact this will cause, the Maylands Lakes Islands are crucial for our community's wellbeing. Studies have shown that urban green spaces promote mental health, and biodiversity can boost this benefit (Frumkin et al., 2017). As a passionate resident and nature lover, I believe we need to protect this precious commodity rather than letting it fall victim without consideration of its current inhabitants.
We urge concerned citizens to counter this destructive plan by signing this petition. Let's tell the city that we value our birds, our wildlife, our green spaces and that we demand they rethink their approach. Your voice matters; for the cormorants, for wildlife, and for us. Please sign this petition today.
