Prevent the Demolition of Vital Community Parking Lot in Toronto

The Issue

I am a resident of Davenport Ward, where parking is a scarce resource. The public parking lot at Green P (Park 246) serves as an essential facility for many residents in our community. Many of us living on Blackthorn Avenue, Silverthorn Avenue, Carrick avenue and multiple St. Clair Avenue West apartments rely heavily on this parking lot due to the lack of driveways and limited street parking.

In our community, like many others within Davenport Ward, the availability of parking spaces is extremely limited. This limitation stems from various factors including urban planning decisions that have led to a lack of driveways for many residences.

The proposed demolition threatens to exacerbate an already critical issue by removing one of our few remaining resources for vehicle parking. It's not just about convenience; it's about maintaining the quality of life that we've come to appreciate in our vibrant neighborhood.

Winter Safety Concerns: As this season is upon us, the parking area's presence is crucial for safe winter conditions. Demolishing it poses risks like narrowed roadways, blocked vehicles, and safety hazards during snow plowing efforts, impacting both drivers and pedestrians.

Scarce Parking for Residents: Car Park 246 is vital for residents without driveways, forcing them and their guests to search for parking far from home or resort to illegal parking if demolished.

Business Impact: Local businesses heavily rely on the parking area, and its reduction may deter potential customers, affecting their revenue. The Route 512 Streetcar TTC line's negative impact on businesses underscores its importance.

Community Groups Affected: Community groups and churches like Cornerstone Baptist Tabernacle, All Nations Seventh Day Adventist Church, and Light Community Wesleyan Community Church depend on the parking lot. Its demolition disrupts their events, potentially discouraging attendance and harming community involvement.

We urge local authorities to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that won't negatively impact residents' access to necessary amenities like parking facilities.
