Prevent the Conversion of 49 Northfield Rd into a HMO for Ex-Offenders

The Issue

I have lived  in New Moston, Manchester,  for 35  years.   I've enjoyed living here with good neighbours and a real sense of community.

Unfortunately  It's come to my attention that the property at 49 Northfield Rd is being transformed into a House of Multiple Occupation (HMO), possibly used to house ex-offenders.

HMO conversions are far from harmless, creating communities within communities, often involving tenants who may not share our communal values. According to a 2017 UK Government report, HMOs have a propensity to lead to reduced property values and increased noise and nuisance. Most worryingly, this specific HMO's potential use to house ex-offenders could endanger the safety of our streets.

We understand the necessity of rehabilitation programs for ex-offenders, but we must also protect our community, considering that the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that UK crime rates have remained consistent in recent years. We want this area to remain a safe space for existing residents.

We have asked Paula Appleby,  our local councillor to request a public meeting with Manchester City Council to address our concerns.

We understand 10 complaints have gone in to the Council so far  but we need much more support from our local community.

We need as many people as possible to make a complaint to Manchester City Council  , especially those people living on Northfield Rd and Hawthorn Rd and the surrounding area.

Please support this petition, signalling to our local council and property owners that we, the community, voice our opposition to the conversion of 49 Northfield Rd into a HMO, particularly one designated for ex-offenders. Let's protect the safety of our community by keeping our residential areas for families and longer-term tenants. Please, sign our petition.
