Growing up in Enid, Oklahoma, I've always cherished the clarity of our waters and the reasonable utility costs that support our community. But with the impending construction of six massive data centers, set to be built right in our backyard, there's a real risk we could lose these precious resources, altering our way of life forever.

Each data center is slated to consume millions of gallons of water annually just to keep their systems cool. This is water that should be for our homes, our schools, and our businesses — not for massive corporations. According to a study by the U.S. Geological Survey, data centers typically use substantial amounts of water, often exceeding the capacity of local water systems. The idea that our families might face water shortages or increased water bills is deeply concerning to all of us who call Enid home.

Moreover, these centers will draw enormous amounts of electricity, pushing our grid to its limits. Historically, regions hosting data centers have experienced significant hikes in electricity rates. In Quincy, Washington, for example, local electricity costs skyrocketed after multiple data centers were established in the area. We can't afford for this to happen here. Higher electricity bills will strain our budgets, especially with rising costs of living.

Supporters of the data centers argue they can bring jobs to our area. However, studies show that such facilities are highly automated, offering minimal employment opportunities while reaping maximum profits — profits that won't necessarily stay in Enid. Our local economy could see little benefit from these data centers while bearing the brunt of their demands on our resources.

We urge local authorities and planners to reconsider and redirect their support away from these developments. Focus efforts instead on sustainable growth projects such as renewable energy industries or technology-driven education centers that align with the best interests of Enid citizens.
