Prevent the closure of safe injection sites

Prevent the closure of safe injection sites
The Issue
For the past 5 years, I've had the privilege of working closely with the homeless community, forming deep bonds and becoming family with many of our brothers and sisters stuck on the streets. This experience has given me a unique insight into the challenges they face daily, including addiction, which is often a result of and a contributor to their precarious situations.
Safe injection sites have been a lifeline for many of these individuals. They are places where people with addictions can use substances under medical supervision, dramatically reducing the risk of overdose deaths. In 2020 alone, more than 93,000 people died from drug overdoses in the U.S., and studies have shown that safe injection sites can reduce overdose deaths by up to 35%. These sites also provide a point of contact, offering additional support services, health care, and pathways to recovery.
Despite their proven benefits, all safe injection sites are scheduled to close down on June 13, with funding being cut completely. This decision will have devastating effects, not only on those who rely on these sites but on the wider community. Without a safe place to use, many will be forced into unsafe conditions, increasing the risk of overdoses and the spread of disease.
It's imperative that we take a stand, not just for those who use these sites, but for public health and safety. We urge policymakers to reconsider this decision, restore funding, and ensure the continued operation of safe injection sites. The cost of closing these sites is too high, and the human lives at risk are too precious.
Sign this petition to demand action and protect the lives and dignity of our most vulnerable community members.
