Community of 11,000 to lose its only Supermarket!! PLEASE HELP AND SIGN

The issue

As a resident of Flaxmere, Hastings, New Zealand, this is a matter that deeply affects me and my community. I am a solo parent living in Flaxmere which is considered a low decile area. The decision by Foodstuffs North Island to not renew the lease on our local store will have significant negative impacts on our community - including the elderly and those with disabilities who rely heavily on its accessibility.

Our local New World store has been more than just a place to buy groceries; it has been an integral part of our daily lives. Its closure would mean longer travel times for basic necessities which can be particularly challenging for those with mobility issues or without access to transportation.

According to Statistics New Zealand, approximately 12% of people in Hastings district are aged 65 years and over while about 25% are under 15 years old (Census 2018). This decision would disproportionately affect these vulnerable groups who may not have the means or ability to travel further distances for their daily needs.

We understand that there are concerns about the building's standard even after refurbishment but we believe there must be other viable solutions rather than closure. We urge Foodstuffs North Island to reconsider their decision and explore other options, such as relocation within Flaxmere or partnering with local authorities for possible funding assistance. Flaxmere needs something in place for these vulnerable population groups.

The wellbeing of our community members should always be prioritised over business decisions. Let's unite as one voice and urge Foodstuffs North Island to keep our local store open! Please sign this petition today!
