The Issue

On Wednesday, 13th May, Age UK Surrey announced the closure of Guildford Shopmobility, a decision made in consultation with Guildford Borough Council. This decision is a purely fiscal one, showing no empathy or concern for the group of disabled and elderly users who rely on this vital service to engage in shopping and visit Guildford's city centre.

The closure, scheduled for 12th June, gives members of our community less than a month to find alternative means of transportation or mobility assistance. Guildford Shopmobility has long provided indispensable support to individuals with mobility challenges, enabling them to maintain their independence, engage socially, and enjoy activities many take for granted.

This rushed consultation period, lacking transparency and genuine concern for the affected individuals, threatens to leave many without the means to participate in daily life. The absence of this service will create significant barriers for the elderly and disabled, isolating them and preventing meaningful participation in community life.

We understand the need for fiscal responsibility, but we urge Age UK Surrey and Guildford Borough Council to reconsider this decision. Instead of closing Guildford Shopmobility, we propose exploring alternative funding solutions, whether through community fundraising efforts, local business sponsorships, or reviewing budget allocations to keep this essential service running.

It's vital we retain this asset to our community. By signing this petition, you can help us demonstrate the urgent need for Guildford Shopmobility and persuade the decision-makers to prioritize the welfare of our elderly and disabled community members.

Please sign and support our campaign to keep Guildford Shopmobility open, ensuring it continues to serve those who depend on it every day.
