Prevent the Closure of Egan Express in Steubenville, OH
The Issue
Our Egan Express, the small but mighty food dispensary located in the heart of our campus, is under threat of closure on Friday, September 27th. This is not just an issue of corporate decision-making and profit margins, this is about our lives, our health, and our wellbeing. As students at Franciscan, we rely on Egan Express daily for sustenance. This is our accessible source of food, something we depend on to keep up our energy and our spirits. With already slim options for obtaining food on campus, this closure will considerably worsen the situation, putting student welfare at stake. Food is a basic right, not a privilege, and having consistent access to it shouldn't be a constant struggle for us.
Students rely on Egan Express to provide some desperately needed calories during short passing periods amongst a long day of classes, or for the long-awaited pick-me-up to get you through the second half of your night class.
Statistics show that food insecurity among university students is a growing concern. According to a survey commissioned by The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, approximately 45% of respondents reported their food security was not consistent ("#RealCollege Survey Report” 2018). The closure of Egan Express would further exacerbate this issue on our campus. We must put pressure on our university and local representatives to take steps to prevent this. Stand up for every student's right to food and sign this petition to stop the closure of Egan Express. We need each and every one of you to make a difference!
Keep Egan Eating!!
