Like many in the United Counties of Leeds Grenville, Ontario, I hold a deep connection to this vibrant community. It pains me to see friends, neighbours, and community members face the uncertainty of homelessness. Our local shelter is not just a building; it is a beacon of hope for many. I firmly believe that housing should not be a privilege, but a basic human right.
In Leeds Grenville we are witnessing an alarming trend. The number of people experiencing homelessness continues to grow. According to recent reports, homelessness in our area has increased by over 20% in the past two years. The closure of our local shelter would be devastating, leaving countless people without support, care, or a place to stay.
Our shelter has been a vital lifeline, providing temporary housing, meals, and compassionate support for those in need. It helps to reintegrate individuals into society by offering job placement programs, counseling, and access to medical care. With winter approaching, its role in the community becomes even more essential.
We urge city officials and community leaders to recognize the critical importance of maintaining this shelter. We propose exploring alternative funding options, including partnerships with local businesses, community fundraisers, and potential government grants. It is crucial to prioritize human lives and ensure that everyone has access to basic necessities, including shelter.
By signing this petition, you will join me in calling on our Joint Services Committee which consists City of Brockville: Mayor Matt Wren (representing 5 members from the City of Brockville) Town of Gananoque: Mayor John Beddows, Town of Prescott: Mayor Gauri Shankar, Township of Athens: Mayor Herb Scott, Township of Augusta: Mayor Jeff Shaver, Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal: Mayor Tory Deschamps, Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley: Mayor Brant Burrow, Township of Front of Yonge: Mayor Roger Haley, Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands: Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke, Village of Merrickville-Wolford: Mayor Michael Cameron, Municipality of North Grenville: Mayor Nancy Peckford, Township of Rideau Lakes: Mayor Arie Hoogenboom and the Village of Westport: Mayor Robin Jones to take immediate action to keep this shelter open. Let's show that Leeds Grenville stands united in compassion and determination, and that we will not let our neighbours be left out in the cold. Sign and share this petition to make our voice heard!
