Prevent the Clear-Cutting of Takhini North Forest

The Issue

As a long-standing resident of Whitehorse, growing up here is filled with countless cherished memories, particularly of free play in forests like the one in Takhini North. Now, as a mother, and Takhini resident it is extremely disheartening to see our beloved forest threatened by proposed development.

This forest is not just a beautiful green space beside our home. It is a vital part of our community, a place where families like mine walk, bike, explore, and connect with nature. My children’s’ preschool, Takhini Elementary School and the proposed École Whitehorse Elementary School (EWES) - all need to rely on this forest for outdoor education and healthy child development. Its disappearance would be a devastating loss.

The proposed clear-cutting doesn't just impact my family; it threatens the quality of life of all the residents and children here. As a healthcare professional, I know how crucial these green spaces are for mental and physical health, especially in the stressful climate we are living in. Studies show that access to nature can reduce stress levels, improve mood, promote physical activity, and enhance cognitive development in children and adults.

I am advocating for the consideration of alternative solutions that prioritize preserving our forest instead of clear-cutting. Our children and future generations deserve access to nature, outdoor classrooms, creativity, socialization and free play. Our vibrant Takhini neighbourhood deserves to grow without losing our green space.

Now, we need your help to safeguard the Takhini North Forest for our children, our community, and our future generations.  Sign this petition to prevent the proposed clear-cutting of our cherished Takhini North Forest.
