The Issue

Last year, a student was involved in an incident involving a firearm at Arlington High School that lead to an arrest and criminal charges. The  involved  student will now be able to return to AHS. This experience has compelled me to act in order to safeguard the well-being of all students at AHS. School should be a safe space for students to learn, grow, and build their futures, free from fear and harm from individuals with concerning backgrounds.

Ensuring the safety of our children is a shared responsibility, necessitating cooperation between schools, families, and the community. While everyone deserves a chance to rebuild and reform, it's crucial to prioritize the safety and protection of our young ones. This petition proposes implementing stricter admission policies at AHS, particularly for those students with violent or severe criminal records that might pose a risk to others.

By establishing a more stringent screening process, the school can identify and provide necessary support to at-risk individuals before any incidents occur. Additionally, resources can be allocated to developing alternative educational programs specifically tailored to these students, where they can receive the education they need in a more suitable environment.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, schools with safety concerns tend to perform lower academically, which can affect both the morale of students and educators alike. Moreover, a study by the University of Michigan suggests that the presence of students with criminal backgrounds can increase tension and fear among peers, creating a disruptive learning experience.

Let's work together to create a safer educational environment at AHS by reassessing admission policies for students with criminal records. Sign this petition and help safeguard the future of our children and our community.
