Prevent solar farms on prime agricultural land

The issue

We are proud third generation grain farmers of premium black soil, a precious and rare gift of nature, bringing life to sorghum, barley, wheat, chickpeas, and mungbeans. Our fields, nestled in Biddeston, QLD, hold not just potential crop yields, but the very lifeline of our community, nurturing livelihoods and local economy through sustainable farming practices.

For generations, this fertile land has supported not only our farms, but the broader community as well, including the rural and lifestyle properties in Biddeston and the residents of Oakey. However, this vital asset is now under threat. The Future X Group has proposed a solar farm project adjacent to our farmland, as detailed on their site: Oakey Project | Future X Group While renewable energy is crucial for a sustainable future, it should not come at the cost of our rich agricultural heritage and community well-being.

We acknowledge the importance of solar energy, but siting a solar farm on prime agricultural land is counterproductive, especially when there are alternative, less fertile sites available. Agricultural productivity should not be sacrificed, especially in a time where food security is increasingly important. Our soils aren't easily replaceable, nor is the heritage of our farming community.

In addition to altering our heritage landscape, the solar project brings risks of property devaluation and could create significant glare for nearby homes.

We, the Oakey and Biddeston community, appeal to policy-makers and environmental planners to rethink this proposal. We need to protect our productive farmland to feed our country and support vibrant rural communities. Our ask is straightforward: relocate the proposed solar farm to a non-arable site where the environmental impact is minimized and agricultural productivity is not jeopardized.

Secure our future by safeguarding our land and our community's way of life. Join us in urging the Future X Group and decision-makers to find a more suitable site for the solar project, preserving both our agricultural legacy and environmental balance. Please sign this petition to stand with us against the inappropriate development of solar farms on prime farmland.
