Prevent Our School From Transitioning into a Co-Education Institute
Prevent Our School From Transitioning into a Co-Education Institute
The Issue
I, like many of my peers, am currently a student at what has been, up until now, a single-sex high school (Mary Erskine). The recent decision to convert our institution into a co-ed school has stirred worry and dissatisfaction among us. We believe our school’s unique character and academic focus will be negatively impacted by this decision.
The research from single-sex education advocates, such as the National Association for Single Sex Public Education in the U.S., suggests that single-sex environment can create better educational climates for students. It shows that single-sex education can be beneficial in fostering a diversified learning experience, tailored to the unique needs of students, creating an atmosphere with fewer gender stereotypes and less gender-based peer pressure.
We respect the rights of those prefer a co-educational setting, but are outraged that we’ve been flung into this situation. For many of us, the single-sex environment of our school is what attracted us to it in the first place.
We ask the school administration and relevant authorities to carefully reconsider this decision, for the sake of the school’s integrity and its students’ academic future. Sign this petition to express your support for maintaining our school’s single-sex education policy.
