Global Petition to Prevent Nuclear Escalation in the Iran Conflict
Statement
We, the undersigned, urgently call on world leaders to prevent the use of nuclear weapons in the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Even the possibility of so-called “tactical” nuclear weapons use carries catastrophic and irreversible humanitarian consequences. The world must act now to ensure that nuclear weapons are not used, under any circumstances.
The Minab School Attack at the Start of the War: A Defining Civilian Tragedy and Alleged Violation of International Humanitarian Law
On 28 February 2026, a missile strike destroyed an elementary school in Minab, killing at least 165 civilians, the majority of them children.
Independent investigations by international organisations have raised serious concerns regarding compliance with international humanitarian law.
The Risk of Escalation
As the conflict continues without a clear path to de-escalation, the risk of escalation beyond conventional warfare, including the use of nuclear weapons, cannot be ignored.
Recent public statements, threats of expanded military action, and signals of willingness to target critical infrastructure have raised serious concerns about the direction of decision-making at the highest levels of political leadership.
In situations where strategic objectives are not achieved and options become limited, the risk of disproportionate escalation, including consideration of nuclear options, can increase.
The concentration of authority over nuclear decision-making in a single office, combined with escalating rhetoric and strategic uncertainty, represents a risk factor that must be taken seriously.
Even limited nuclear use would have consequences far beyond the immediate battlefield, with long-term humanitarian, environmental, and global security impacts.
Our Call to Action
We call for the following immediate action:
- A clear and public commitment that nuclear weapons will not be used in this conflict.
- The convening of an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.
- An independent international investigation into civilian casualties, including the Minab school strike.
- Immediate and sustained diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
Why this Matters
The use of nuclear weapons must remain beyond the threshold of acceptability, everywhere and without exception.
Preventing nuclear escalation is a shared global responsibility.
