The Issue

Elected officials, specifically Members of Parliament (MPs), currently have the ability to claim expenses for council tax and heating allowance, while at the same time many pensioners are having their heating allowance reduced or denied. This practice seems unjust, considering MPs are public servants earning well above the average income level. According to the latest Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority report, the basic annual salary for an MP is £81,932 (as of April 2021). Comparatively, the maximum winter fuel payment available to elderly citizens is just £300 annually. Therefore, the cuts to pensioners' heating allowances are particularly hard to justify. We believe there should be a review of MPs' expenses to ensure fair distribution of taxpayers' funds and support for those most in need. Help us rectify this by joining our call to end this practice.
