Peterborough City Council is considering a policy to make CCTV installation mandatory in all taxis and private hire vehicles. Such a policy would infringe upon the privacy of drivers, passengers, and the wider public. This compulsory surveillance also imposes an unnecessary financial burden on drivers who have already suffered due to the recent pandemic. The downside of this policy far outweighs its proposed benefits. Furthermore, this policy could lead to a mass exodus of drivers willing to get licensed with another council, still operating in Peterborough but without CCTV. This would diminish the Council's authority and disrupt the city's transportation services. Our petition stands to demonstrate the vast number of drivers ready to resist this excessive surveillance policy.
