Prevent local gas station from selling alcohol beverages for a safer community.

The Issue

Al-Huda Islamic Association (Al-Huda) is a mosque located in Dearborn, Michigan and offers multiple services to the community. Al-Huda was completed and operational in October of 2020. Al-Huda offers prayer services, classes and lectures, marriage services, funeral services, and youth programs.

The issuance of a liquor license in close proximity to a mosque is detrimental to the mosque and the community. There are several reasons for this sentiment. In Islam, the consumption of alcohol is generally prohibited. This prohibition is based on explicit verses in the Quran that forbid intoxicants. Muslims are encouraged to avoid not only the consumption of alcohol but also any involvement in its production, distribution, or sale. The prohibition is meant to protect individuals and society from the harmful effects of intoxicants and to promote a healthy and morally upright lifestyle.

Some concerns raised by members of the mosque or the surrounding community include:

1.    Cultural and Religious Sensitivities:

Consumption of alcohol are inconsistent with the cultural or religious values of the community associated with the mosque. Members of the mosque find the presence of a liquor-selling establishment near their place of worship offensive or incompatible with their beliefs.

2.    Impact on Atmosphere:

Members of the mosque are concerned that the presence of a liquor-serving establishment could affect the peaceful and solemn atmosphere that they seek in and around their place of worship.

3.    Potential for Disruption:

Concerns arise about potential disruptions, such as increased noise, unruly behavior, or disturbances in the vicinity of the mosque due to the operation of a busy gas station with a liquor license.

4.   Community Image:

Members of the community worry that the association of a mosque with a nearby business selling alcohol could negatively impact the image of the mosque and the broader Muslim community.

5.    Youth and Families:

Families with children attending the mosque or living in the area express concerns about the impact of a liquor-serving establishment on the well-being and safety of their children.

6.   Respect for Religious Practices:

Members of the mosque argue that the issuance of a liquor license near their place of worship lacks respect for their religious practices and the sanctity of the mosque.

7.    Legal Protections:

Concerns might be raised about whether local zoning laws and regulations, designed to protect the interests of religious institutions, are being appropriately enforced.

8.   Community Harmony:

There could be concerns about the potential for tension or conflicts within the community if the coexistence of a liquor-selling establishment and a mosque is perceived as a source of discord.

9.   Community Concerns:

The presence of a liquor store near a mosque may evoke concerns within the community. Some community members, influenced by religious or cultural beliefs, may be uncomfortable with the idea of a liquor store in close proximity to a place of worship. This can lead to discussions and debates within the community about the appropriateness of such establishments.

10. Community Character:

Aesthetic Concerns: Members of the community argue that the presence of liquor stores will change the character and atmosphere of a community, impacting property values and creating an environment that is less desirable for families.

11. Underage Drinking:

Members of the community worry about the accessibility of alcohol to underage individuals, particularly if a liquor store is in close proximity to schools or places frequented by young people.

12. Crime and Disorder:

Association with Crime: Studies suggest a correlation between the density of alcohol-selling establishments and certain types of crimes. Concerns about an increase in crime rates motivate opposition to liquor licenses.

Sincerely,

Mansoor Mashrah, Board President
