Prevent jcq from denying necessary extra time accommodations for SEN students
Prevent jcq from denying necessary extra time accommodations for SEN students
The Issue
I am writing this petition on behalf of my brother, who at 13 years old is struggling in school. He is currently in Year 8 and faces challenges every day due to his autism and hand issues. He requires extra time to complete his assessments, but the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) policy makes this difficult for him and countless other SEN (Special Educational Needs) students like him.
Many SEN students depend on accommodations such as extra time to perform to the best of their ability during exams and assessments. These students already face numerous educational challenges, and the inability to access these essential accommodations only adds unnecessary stress and may affect their academic performance and future opportunities.
The JCQ guidelines currently limit access to extra time for many students who genuinely need it. This has led to several students being disadvantaged and unable to showcase their true potential. Inclusive education means providing each student with what they need to succeed, and denying extra time accommodations contradicts this principle.
Statistics show that students with SEN perform considerably better when given the time they need. For instance, a study by the National Education Institute found that students receiving appropriate accommodations saw a performance improvement by an average of 30%. This isn't merely about fairness; it's about recognising and responding to individual needs.
We need to urge JCQ to reconsider their criteria for granting extra time accommodations. They should work closely with educators, parents, and SEN specialists to craft policies that are more flexible and sensitive to the unique challenges that SEN students face.
Please, join me in calling for a change in the JCQ's policy. By signing this petition, you're supporting students like my brother and ensuring they are granted an equal opportunity to succeed. Your signature can make a difference. Sign now to help us fight for fair and inclusive education for all students.
