Prevent installation of speed bumps and traffic calming devices in Crestwood South
The Issue
As residents of the historic Crestwood South Neighborhood in Birmingham, AL, we cherish the unique character and aesthetic beauty of our area. Our neighborhood is not just a collection of houses but a community with a deep sense of history and pride. However, the proposal to install speed bumps, humps, cushions, and other so-called "traffic calming devices" threatens the very fabric of our community.
**De-Valuation of Property**: Speed bumps and similar structures are often perceived as eyesores. They disrupt the seamless visual appeal of our historic streets, leading to a decrease in property values. Our neighborhood's charm and historical significance are part of what makes it such a desirable place to live. We must protect this by preserving its original look and feel.
**Slowing of Emergency Vehicle Access**: Every second counts in an emergency, and impediments like speed bumps can delay emergency responders, putting lives at risk. The installation of these devices hinders the quick access needed by fire trucks, ambulances, and police vehicles to serve our community efficiently.
**Vehicle Damage and Safety Issues**: The installation of speed bumps leads to vehicle wear and tear, increasing the cost for motorists in our community. Additionally, abrupt stops or uneven driving conditions can lead to accidents, contradicting the intended purpose of improving road safety.
**Noise and Air Pollution**: The constant start-stop motion required by speed bumps can lead to increased noise levels and air pollution. The frequent braking and acceleration not only disturb the peace but also pose environmental concerns with heightened emissions from vehicles.
**Excessive Cost to Taxpayers**: The financial burden of installing and maintaining these traffic devices is significant. Given the dubious value they provide in accident prevention, using taxpayer money for these installations seems unwarranted. Resources could be better allocated to alternative measures that ensure road safety without compromising our neighborhood, such as installation of sidewalks and street lighting as most pedestrian accidents occur at night on streets without sidewalks and without adequate street lighting.
In conclusion, the introduction of traffic calming devices does not align with the values and needs of the Crestwood South Neighborhood. We urge decision-makers in the Birmingham City Government and the Crestwood South Neighborhood Association to reconsider this proposal. We believe our community can explore alternative solutions that maintain public safety while preserving the historical and aesthetic integrity of our area.
