Petition updatePrevent Installation of Light Show in Central Park East That Could Harm Wildlife. The Light Show Puts Monarch Butterflies at Risk

Artificial light at night (ALAN) can significantly impact butterfly migration in Central Park. Migratory species like the monarch (Danaus plexippus) rely on natural light cues, such as the setting sun and the moon, to navigate. Even small amounts of artificial light can disrupt their ability to orient properly, potentially causing them to veer off course or delay migration. Additionally, artificial light can interfere with their circadian rhythms, impacting feeding, reproduction, and overall survival rates.

Scientists are increasingly concerned about the decline in butterfly populations over the last 20 years. Studies have shown significant drops in both abundance and diversity, with some species, like the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), experiencing declines of over 80%. This is alarming because butterflies play a crucial role in ecosystems as pollinators and as part of the food chain for birds and other wildlife.

The causes of this decline are complex and include habitat loss, climate change, pesticide use, and artificial light pollution. Urbanization and excessive nighttime lighting disrupt their migration patterns, feeding cycles, and reproductive behaviors, making survival even more challenging. In places like Central Park, where butterflies pass through annually, increased artificial lighting could further accelerate their decline.

Scientists warn that if these trends continue, we could see the loss of key butterfly populations, which would have cascading effects on entire ecosystems. Immediate action is needed to protect their habitats, reduce light pollution, and address other environmental threats before it's too late.

To stop the upcoming light show that would worsen these effects, we need to gather 14,000 signatures. This is our chance to make a difference and protect butterfly migration through Central Park. Please share the petition widely—every signature counts!
