The Issue

Growing up immersed in music and the performing arts can be a transformative experience. As someone who benefited from these programs, I know firsthand the boundless opportunities they provide. From theater to choir and band, music education unlocks doors to creativity, collaboration, and self-expression, offering children a pathway to develop essential life skills. It is heart-wrenching to think that the future of these programs, essential for nurturing young talent and fostering a thriving school community, is at risk in the Gresham-Barlow School District.

The district is considering severe budget cuts to Performing Arts Programs impacting all schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. These cuts threaten to dismantle programs that have historically equipped thousands of students with confidence, discipline, and a sense of achievement. Education in the arts is not a luxury; it is a fundamental building block for developing well-rounded, imaginative, and emotionally intelligent individuals. The current crisis endangers not only the availability but the very existence of these programs for future generations.

According to numerous studies, students involved in music and arts education tend to perform better academically, demonstrating higher test scores and improved graduation rates compared to their peers without similar exposure. These programs do more than teach children how to sing or play an instrument; they foster critical thinking, enhance cognitive abilities, and bolster emotional wellbeing.

Eliminating funds for these programs ignores the extensive body of research supporting the myriad benefits of arts education. It would reduce educational equity, particularly affecting those students who rely on school as their primary venue for exploring artistic interests and developing related skills. The arts provide a unique blend of creative and academic learning, serving as a vital counterbalance to traditional subjects while enriching the entire educational experience.

We recognize the financial challenges faced by the district, but cutting funding for performing arts is not the solution. We urge the Gresham-Barlow School District to explore alternative budgetary decisions that preserve these essential programs. Possible strategies include seeking community partnerships, applying for arts education grants, or reallocating existing resources more strategically to fund these important areas.

By signing this petition, you help us send a clear message to the school district: the arts matter and deserve continued support and investment. Let us stand together to ensure that our schools remain places where all students, regardless of background, can explore their potential in the performing arts. Please sign this petition to show your support for sustaining arts education in the Gresham-Barlow School District.
