Prevent Fines and Legal Action Against Parents and carers of School-Aged SEND Children

Prevent Fines and Legal Action Against Parents and carers of School-Aged SEND Children
The Issue
As a parent of three children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), I experience daily the many challenges this situation poses. Notwithstanding the love and joy my children bring, their educational journey has proven to be an uphill battle against an education system that is in dire need of reform. This broken system goes to the extent of penalising parents of SEND children for their low attendance at school. It's a disheartening scenario that I and countless other families live with every day. The stress this puts on families is unacceptable. Children with SEND require a tailored and comprehensive approach to education. Their absence from school often arises from situations beyond their control or that of their parents/carers . Consequently, treating these absences as trivial and blaming parents is an appalling misuse of the law. The Institute of Public Policy Research has found that over 15,000 fines were issued in the UK to parents of SEND children due to non-attendance within the school year of 2017/18. Due to the new laws around school attendance, parents/carers are now having to sit in court and explain why their child’s attendance is low. Not only is this a major concern for the wellbeing of these families but it also fails to address fundamental issues with the education system and its approach towards SEND children. We firmly believe that the priority of the education system should be to provide an inclusive environment for SEND children rather than resorting to punitive measures against their parents. Let's urge the government, the local authorities, and the responsible bodies to rethink their policies and provide necessary support rather than penalties. We need to put an end to fining and penalising parents of SEND children. When you sign this petition, you’re joining a movement for real, substantive change for families like ours everywhere. Together, we can and we must ensure a better future for all SEND children. Please, sign the petition.
