The Issue

In the quiet, rural area of Springdale, Wisconsin, a proposal is threatening to change the landscape forever: the rezoning of 27 acres of critical farmland. For those of us who call this place home, this issue strikes deeply into the heart of our community. Farmland in this area is not just land; it’s a lifeline for our economy, a backbone for our local environment, and a pillar on which our community stands. I ask you to act with me and sign this petition.

Agricultural lands in Wisconsin represent more than 15 million acres of the states total 54 million acres, contributing to a $104.8 billion economic output yearly.  Wisconsin lost 6,272 farms and 533,952 acres of farmland from 2017 to 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2022 Census of Agriculture released Feb. 13. Our title as "America Dairyland," reflects the integral role farming plays in our state’s identity and economy. Allowing rezoning in Springdale would set a dangerous precedent, potentially opening the door for further losses of invaluable farmland.

Beyond economics, our environment depends on this land. Farms naturally maintain biodiversity, support ecosystems, and contribute to carbon sequestration, significantly mitigating the impact of climate change. Moreover, farmland can help manage flood risks by absorbing rainfall, which is crucial during Wisconsin increasingly intense storm seasons. Losing this farmland would directly harm our environment and heighten these existing threats.

We understand that development is essential, but it must be balanced with preserving what makes Springdale unique. This proposal would destroy 27 acres of farmland for a minimal number of single-family homes and is driven purely by financial gain for the current owners.

We urge the decision-makers and stakeholders involved in this proposal to reject the rezoning of our valuable farmland. Protecting Springdale’s land means protecting our community’s future, the environment, and our state’s economy. Please stand with us in safeguarding our home, our land, and our legacy for future generations.

Sign this petition to ensure that Springdale’s farmland is preserved for future prosperity.
