The Issue

I run a business in a busy multi-unit shopping center along County Road 218 in Middleburg, FL. The road expansion project intends to install medians that will block direct access to these businesses, requiring patrons to make risky U-turns on the main highway. As someone deeply affected, I urge those involved in the roadway development to consider the safety implications of this plan.

County Road 218 has a notorious history of accidents, many of them fatal. Adding obstacles that impede direct access to businesses will force drivers into the precarious situation of executing U-turns on an already dangerous highway. Rather than facilitating travel and improving safety, these plans stand to increase the number of unnecessary, risky maneuvers, which could lead to more accidents.

For Middleburg businesses, reduced access means potential loss of customers who find it inconvenient or unsafe to reach their destinations. This could result in financial loss and decrease the vibrancy of our local community as a whole. The current plan threatens not only safety but also the livelihood of numerous small business owners.

A reasonable, safe solution is needed—one that ensures businesses remain accessible, eliminates the need for dangerous driving maneuvers, and maintains the safety and efficiency of County Road 218. We urge the local authorities and planners to revisit the current road construction plan immediately, allowing unhindered access to all businesses on the highway by either removing or altering the obstructive medians.

The voices of Middleburg citizens must be heard to avoid exacerbating an already serious safety issue. Help us keep County Road 218 safe and vibrant by signing this petition and supporting all those who live and work in this area. Together, we can push for a safer solution and protect our community's prosperity and safety.
