The Issue

As a member of a community of concerned neighbors here in Nutley, New Jersey, Nutley Neighbors for Responsible Development (NNRD) is reaching out to you with an urgent plea to halt the potential construction of a data center planned by PRISM/ON3 at 275 Kingsland Street. We are protesting against this new development and we are taking a stance for the safety and well-being of every resident in our beloved Nutley community.

We have witnessed the detrimental impacts of similar developments in nearby areas like Hackensack and Secaucus, where spills and accidents have posed significant risks to both residents and the surrounding environments. Residents in those towns have had to endure environmental hazards that threaten their air quality, water supply, and overall public health. It's a model we do not wish to replicate in our neighborhood, where we cherish our clean streets and friendly atmosphere.

The potential data center construction poses not just a potential environmental hazard but also a significant alteration to Nutley's character. It can increase noise pollution, it can skyrocket energy demands, requiring sprawling infrastructure that disrupts our community space. We want our commissioners and Prism to know that the benefits from these developments do not outweigh the longstanding impacts on the health and safety of our residents.

We propose a halt on data center developments until proper assessments and community dialogues can outline viable, sustainable alternatives that align with Nutley’s identity and public interest. There are better solutions that mitigate risk while embracing innovation, such as smaller, eco-friendly establishments or developments that benefit every part of our society.

Our commissioners need to hear our voices clearly: We do not want data centers in our backyard. Our community deserves to remain a close-knit, safe, and environmentally sound haven for our families to grow and thrive. The need for economic growth should not come at the cost of our health or the fabric of our community.

Please join us in this essential endeavor to ensure the legacy of Nutley as a safe, vibrant, and healthy place to live. Sign this petition to help us protect our neighborhoods from the adverse effects that accompany these developments. Together, we can send a compelling message: no Nutley data centers!

“September 25, 2026 Board of Commissioners FAQ on Potential Data Center The Township of Nutley Board of Commissioners has prepared the following Frequently Asked Questions regarding the construction of a potential data center at the ON3 site, located at 275 Kingsland Street: Litigation History Following Hoffman LaRoche’s closure of its campus in Nutley and Clifton, its campus was purchased by a developer, Prism, and marketed as ON3. It is important to note that Hoffman LaRoche generated approximately ten percent of Nutley’s tax revenue. Nutley and Clifton declared the former Hoffman LaRoche campus an area in need of redevelopment and designated Prism as the redeveloper. Thereafter, numerous lawsuits were filed by and between Prism, Nutley and Clifton and several rulings in those lawsuits were against Nutley. One of those rulings allowed Prism to proceed with its application to construct a trucking terminal on Kingsland Avenue. We did not want a trucking terminal on Kingsland Avenue, and we also wanted to stop the litigation and the payment of legal fees. Following several months of negotiations, we reached a comprehensive settlement agreement with Prism that will allow the former Hoffman LaRoche campus to be further redeveloped and generate additional revenue for Nutley. The settlement agreement contemplates the construction of a data center or other uses, including assisted-living facilities, offices, science and clinical laboratories, storage facilities, research laboratories, active and passive recreation, or open space on Kingsland Avenue. Has a data center been approved for 275 Kingsland Street? The Township has not received an application for the construction of a data center at 275 Kingsland Street. If no application has been received or approved, why has there been discussion about a data center? Prism placed a sign at the site advertising it as available for a data center. The sign led to residents requesting information about the development of the site as a data center. Will residents have an opportunity to participate and comment if an application is submitted to the planning board? If the developer files an application for the construction of a data center, the application will be heard by the planning board. The planning board will evaluate the application pursuant to New Jersey’s Municipal Land Use Law and residents will be able to participate in the planning board hearings. How does the Governor’s data center initiative impact any application? Governor Sherrill has announced a comprehensive statewide plan to address data centers’ impact on energy, resources and local communities. Her plan includes “four pillars” of responsible construction and operation of data centers. * Establishing statewide rules to ensure data centers bring new clean energy online and contribute to the infrastructure needed to support their growth, shifting costs away from residents and ratepayers. * Public reporting of energy and water use to provide the public with visibility concerning energy and water impacts. * Developing statewide standards for community benefit agreements to ensure that data center owners and operators address light, noise, and pollution and also make a meaningful investment in the community where they operate. * Delivering good-paying jobs by ensuring that data centers pay prevailing wages. The Township will endeavor to have a public meeting with our legislative leaders to address developments at the state level with residents.
