Prevent changes to Edmonton's bylaw on exotic pets
The Issue
Owning and breeding exotic pets has not only been a passion of mine but also integral to my livelihood. As a proud resident of Edmonton, Alberta, my family and I have dedicated our lives to caring for these unique creatures and sharing our knowledge and experience with the local community. However, newly proposed changes to the city’s bylaw threaten to disrupt not only my life but also the broader community's ability to own and care for these animals responsibly. The city of Edmonton want to lump all venomous reptiles into one category and venomous insects. If this happens your friendly harmless bearded dragon, garter snake, ants and so much are at risk of becoming illegal to own.
Exotic pets, which include reptiles, birds, and small mammals, are beloved by many. They serve as companions, educational tools, and sometimes even therapeutic presences in people's lives. As of this moment, Edmonton’s current regulations adequately address the safe and responsible ownership of these animals, ensuring both their welfare and public safety. Introducing stricter rules not only jeopardizes small businesses, like mine, that rely on breeding and selling these pets but also risks overwhelming local animal shelters.
In Edmonton alone, there are hundreds of families who cherish their exotic pets and consider them an integral part of their households. Altering the bylaw would force many pet owners to make heartbreaking decisions, potentially leading to a rise in abandoned animals and an overextended animal care system.
Instead of imposing sweeping changes, we urge city officials to engage with owners, experts, and businesses to find a balanced solution that respects the rights of exotic pet owners while still maintaining public safety. We propose the establishment of a regulatory body comprising of both city officials and community representatives to assess cases on an individual basis and develop educational programs that promote responsible ownership.
Sign this petition to urge Edmonton city council to refrain from enforcing these harmful bylaw amendments. Together, we can ensure that the rights of exotic pet owners are protected while fostering a community that values both animal welfare and public safety.
