Das Problem

Our voice is essential in responding to misinformation, yet the British press possesses an alarming authority to unilaterally silence public opinion. I initiated this online petition because of my deep-rooted belief in the power of free speech. The British press, at times, hinders our ability to refute or corroborate the content they publish by disabling comments on news reports. This act is not just a betrayal to readers, but also a potential threat to historical accuracy.

According to a study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, reader comments can provide crucial corrective measures to potential media bias and falsehoods. It is also worth noting that the principle of freedom of speech is enshrined in Article 10 of the Human Rights Act 1998, demonstrating the significance of maintaining open outlets for public feedback on published news articles. With over 32 million daily news readers in the UK, freedom to provide feedback is an important cornerstone to foster engaged readership and facilitate public scrutiny.

Silencing comments denies the public the opportunity to challenge, raise concerns and create discourse over what is reported. The potential long-term consequences of such a practice includes the propagation of unchallenged misinformation, shaping an incorrect history for future generations to come.

Collectively, we have the power to bring about change. We urge for a regulation that disallows the press from preventing comments on their reported news stories. It is a necessary step toward ensuring the preservation of our fundamental right to freedom of speech and setting a precedent for factual reporting and transparent journalism. Please sign this petition in support of maintaining open discourse within the media.
