Prevent Brain Drain in Sri Lanka

The Issue

Sri Lanka is more than just a country to me; it's home. Yet, as it stands today, Sri Lanka is a nation burdened with debt, struggling to find its footing in a world that's constantly changing. Having benefited from Sri Lanka's public education system myself, I understood how crucial it is for each of us who have used this free resource to contribute positively to the nation that educated us.

Even though public education is free, the cost to the country is exponential. Every year, bright minds graduate from our esteemed universities, only to leave in search of better opportunities abroad. It's understandable that individuals seek better lives for themselves, but it's also vital to support our homeland, especially when it has given us the gift of education.

Therefore, we propose a policy change. Graduates who have benefitted from Sri Lanka's free university education should be required to work within the country for at least 10 years after graduation. This will ensure that the skills and education, partly funded by taxpayers, contribute back to the country during crucial periods.

Moreover, considering a means-tested approach to free education can further ensure that resources are allocated to those who truly need them and encourage accountability among students.

This isn't just about policy; it's about ensuring that our nation can climb out of debt and thrive. It's about creating opportunities within Sri Lanka so our graduates don't feel like leaving is their only option.

Help us make Sri Lanka stronger and lift the burden of debt through collective responsibility. Sign this petition to support measures that will prevent brain drain and build a brighter future for our beloved country.
