The Issue

I'm currently living through a painful experience that no one should have to endure: my domestic violence case was adjourned due to a lack of time, forcing me to relive the trauma yet again. After waiting for an entire year for a court date, I found myself back at square one. Turning the clock back means living in fear and anxiety once more, and revisiting the past that I am striving hard to move beyond. This system needs to change, not just for myself, but for countless others who find themselves in similar situations, stuck in a cycle of waiting and uncertainty.

Domestic violence cases are extremely delicate and should be treated with the urgency they deserve. Statistics from the World Health Organization reveal that 1 in 3 women globally experience physical or sexual violence, primarily by an intimate partner. This underlines the severity and prevalence of the issue, necessitating immediate attention and resolution. When court cases are adjourned, the survivors are not just kept waiting—they are left vulnerable, feeling unheard, and are forced to relive their trauma repeatedly. This is not just a procedural delay; it is a postponement of justice.

In our court system, such delays can have dire implications for survivors' safety and mental health. Research published by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence indicates that these delays can even deter victims from seeking justice due to the prolonged emotional burden and fear of retaliation during the adjournment period. In the UK alone, thousands of cases face adjournments each year, leaving countless victims in limbo. This must change.

We call for a legal reform that prevents unnecessary adjournments and ensures domestic violence cases are prioritized and expedited through the judicial process. This includes strengthening court resources, including staffing, to handle these sensitive matters efficiently and adopting a trauma-informed approach that acknowledges the psychological impact on survivors.

Your support is crucial. By signing this petition, we can draw attention to this issue and press for a judicial system that truly supports victims and prioritizes their safety and wellbeing. Stand with us in preventing adjournments in domestic violence cases—sign the petition now for justice and a safer future for all.
