Press Congress to award the Gold Medal to World War II nurses
The Issue
My great aunt Alice Darrow is one of only five living World War II nurses. I'd like to see her honored while she's alive, and I've launched a grassroots campaign to pressure Congress to award the Gold Medal to World War II nurses.
As a country, we have awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to Rosie the Riveters and the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII and just last year, in a moving ceremony honoring two of the five remaining survivors, to WWII Army Rangers.
And nurses?
Congress has let a bill with bipartisan support die in committee four times.
Nurses rose to the occasion and beyond, doing physician-level work, often in combat or under threat of attack, and they did so without physician rank of pay. They cared for countless wounded. Any of us who are descendants of WWII veterans probably have a nurse to thank for our very existence.
Only five of these nurses are still alive. 2026 will bring the 85th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, and it is the 250th birthday of the United States of America.
What are we waiting for?
Please, sign this petition today and share it broadly. We need to show Congress their constituents care about working together to honor people that meet the call to serve.
And follow this campaign's progress. I'll be sharing personal stories—including Alice's incredible story of meeting a sailor with a bullet in his heart from the attack on Pearl Harbor—and campaign updates.
If you'd like to do more, you can send a personal letter to your Congressional Representatives. A coalition of volunteers working for this goal has put together sample letters you can use. Follow up with a phone call, if you can.
THANK YOU for your support. Let's make it happen, for Alice and every other nurse who served!
