Questa petizione riguarda il sito storico di Recoaro Terme, denominato “Bunker Kesselring”, situato alle Fonti Centrali, di proprietà della Regione Veneto, per ciò che concerne le visite guidate da persone armate con divise militari tedesche e checkpoint all’ingresso.

Dal Bunker il comando delle forze armate tedesche in Italia, guidato dal Generale Kesselring, coordinava la difesa contro gli alleati schierati sulla Linea Gotica sugli Appennini. Il sito aveva un’importanza strategica enorme, ed è quindi di grande interesse storico. Infatti, venne poi bombardato dagli alleati e, poco dopo, in quel bunker si decise la resa delle forze armate tedesche in Italia, ratificata poi altrove.

Il tema, dunque, non è quello della ricostruzione di un sito storico, bensì il modo di presentarlo ai visitatori, con guide armate in divisa tedesca e il checkpoint militare all’ingresso. Questo crea sconcerto in una parte della comunità locale e nazionale. Risveglia il ricordo di tragedie immani, atrocità commesse anche da chi occupava quel luogo. Kesselring fu condannato per crimini di guerra da una giuria internazionale. Inoltre, come abbiamo visto dalla diffusione dell’argomento su tutti i principali media nazionali, esiste un danno di immagine per il paese, potenzialmente anche all’estero.

Questo sito di portata storica è di proprietà pubblica, della Regione Veneto. Appartiene alla comunità locale e nazionale, e si dovrebbe quindi tener conto delle varie sensibilità. Le guide armate in divisa creano problemi a una parte dei potenziali visitatori; le guide in abiti civili non creano problemi a nessuno. Perché ostinarsi a mantenere questo aspetto del sito, quando con un semplice cambiamento si metterebbe d’accordo tutti, per il bene del progetto stesso, con un suo maggior successo che abbraccia tutta la comunità? Basterebbe deporre le armi, togliere le divise, il checkpoint militare e indossare abiti civili. Così avveniva un tempo con le visite guidate in abiti civili, senza alcuna controversia.

Con questa petizione chiediamo al Presidente della Regione Veneto, proprietaria del sito, di agire per rettificare questo aspetto del progetto. Il contratto di concessione a “Recoaro Terme S.p.A.” sta per terminare. Crediamo che la Regione possa stabilire condizioni a riguardo quando si appresterà a concedere la gestione delle Fonti Centrali di Recoaro Terme al prossimo gestore.

LAY DOWN YOUR WEAPONS

This petition regards the historic site in the Italian town Recoaro Terme, known as the Kesselring’s Bunker. It is situated in the Fonti Centrali enclave, a public spa resort owned by the Veneto Region. The controversial issue concerns the guided tours by armed personnel in German uniform and a military checkpoint at the entrance, reminiscent of atrocities committed by the Nazi.

From the site, the High Command of the German occupying armed forces in Italy, headed by General Kesselring, coordinated the German defence against the advancing allies positioned in the Gothic Line of the Apennine. The site was of enormous strategic significance and is therefore of great historic interest. It was finally bombed by ally raids and, soon after, in the bunker the Germans decided to surrender.

Thus, the issue in this petition does not regard the reconstruction of the historical site, it concerns the way it is presented to the visitors, by armed guides in German uniform and a military checkpoint at the entrance. This causes distress to many members of the national and international community. It brings back atrocious memories. General Kesselring was charge and sentenced for war crime by an international jury. Also, the issue had widespread coverage from the Italian media, conveying a negative image of the town and the country.

Being this site of public ownership, it belongs to the community and the distress caused to many should be taken into consideration by the authorities. The armed guide in uniform and the military checkpoint cause pain to part of the public; on the contrary, guided tours by people in civilian clothes does not cause any problem. Why then keep this element of the visit, when a simple change would cause no harm to anybody? It would be very simple: lay down the weapons, take off the uniform, remove the military checkpoint and put on civilian clothes. This is how visits were guided in the past, without any controversy.

With this petition we ask the President of the Veneto Region, public owner of the site, to act to rectify that aspect of the visit. The contract with the private company Terme di Recoaro S.p.A, which manage the resort, is about to expire. We believe that the Veneto Region can establish conditions on the matter when awarding the new contract to the next company, to remove this element from the historic site, so that everybody can enjoy the visit without distressful consequences.
