After the Chinese authorities recently paraded Zhang Kai ‘confessing’ his crimes, he remains in detention and the authorities continue the demolition of church crosses. Release partners China Aid report that, since the beginning of March, approximately 10 more crosses have been torn down across Wenzhou in Zhejiang province. They also report that other churches which have managed to protect their crosses from demolition teams have had water and electricity turned off by the city. China Aid now estimate that around 2,000 church crosses have been demolished in Zhejiang since April 2014 as a result of this ongoing campaign of ‘beautification’ by the authorities.
