The Issue

Dear President Trump,

Many Iranians recognize your goal of maintaining regional stability and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. Many have also looked to your policies with hope for meaningful change.

However, targeting Iran’s energy and electrical infrastructure would be a serious mistake.

This will not weaken the government; it will help it survive‌ through intimidation and suppression of the opposition.

Iran’s military capabilities, including control over the Strait of Hormuz, do not depend on the civilian power grid. Striking it will not stop military operations, but it will shift the burden entirely onto civilians, creating conditions that strengthen internal control and reduce public dissent.

  • A nationwide blackout would have immediate and devastating consequences:
Hospitals will fail: lifesaving equipment, ICUs, and surgeries depend on electricity
  • Water systems will collapse: urban supply and sanitation would be disrupted
  • Food supply chains will break down: leading to shortages and instability

Such actions also risk broader consequences:

  • Mass migration: infrastructure collapse could trigger large scale displacement
  • Regional instability: including threats to disrupt electricity and energy flows across the region
  • Long term resentment: it will turn existing openness among many Iranians into lasting resentment

Under principles recognized by the United Nations and international humanitarian law, civilian infrastructure indispensable to survival must remain off limits.
If the goal is stability, this approach risks the opposite, prolonging the survival of the current system while deepening instability.

We urge you to:

  • Refrain from targeting civilian infrastructure

  • Consider the impact on Iranian public sentiment

  • Pursue strategies that maintain pressure without uniting people behind the government

Support the Iranian people! Do not push them toward the system they are struggling to overcome.
