The American People Demand Access to Medical Cannabis Immediately

Most Americans are not aware that cannabis (marijuana) was legal in the U.S. until the racist Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was passed.  While the Act was ruled unconstitutional years later, it was replaced with the Controlled Substances Act in the 1970’s which established Schedules for ranking substances according to their dangerousness and potential for addiction. Cannabis was placed in the most restrictive category, Schedule I.  It maintains this Federal status today.

Cannabis has been used for hundreds of years by mankind for medicinal purposes.  It was never clearly understood why it works so well for so many maladies until the endocannabinoid system was discovered.

What Is the Endocannabinoid System?  The endogenous cannabinoid system, named after the plant that led to its discovery, is perhaps the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.

This discovery completely obliterates the Government perpetuated myth that cannabis has no medicinal value.  A recent survey showed that almost 50% of Americans have tried cannabis.  For the other 50%, this system is in your body as well, meaning you actually have naturally occurring cannabis in your system.  This applies to all mammals with vertebrae (a backbone).

The current opioid addiction crises is literally killing Americans daily.  The mechanism of death in an opioid overdose is that it effects the site in the brain stem that controls respiration causing respiratory arrest and death.  Narcan (Naloxone) has been carried on Paramedic manned rescue units since the advent of Advanced Life Support in the late 70’s.  The drug reverses this effect and saves the lives of these victims.

The endocannabinoid system, on the other hand, has lots of receptors in the brain but not in the brain stem.  This is why it is almost impossible to overdose on cannabis.  The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration drug sheet for marijuana reports that no deaths from marijuana overdose have ever been recorded.  So the belief that one is “exchanging highs” using cannabis rather than opioids is a false equivalency.

Moreover, not all strains of cannabis get one “high.” The two most recognized chemicals in cannabis are THC and CBD. High THC cannabis gets you high. However, high CBD, low THC does not. In fact, high CBD, low THC strains are the only ones included in Florida’s newly implemented medical marijuana law, for example.

The best known high CBD, low THC strain is called Charlotte’s Web.  This cannabis strain literally saved the life of a child named Charlotte.  Her father had to leave the military and move his family to Colorado to save her.  Read and watch the story here;

This strain is particularly effective in the treatment of seizures as you will discover with the link above.  Israel has been doing scientific research on cannabis for years.  In May, because 30% of Autistic children also have seizures, a double blind scientific study of high CBD low THC has been started to scientifically determine cannabis’ effectiveness in treating Autism.

The list of maladies that medical cannabis can treat or eliminate is to voluminous to list here.  Here is a quick reference:

This is a link to a five-minute primer on the science behind medical cannabis’ effectiveness:

Much is made about freedom and choice in America.  The American people demand the freedom to choose whether or not medical cannabis is appropriate for them.

The American people, by signing this petition, therefore demand that medical cannabis be removed from Schedule I classification and made available to the American people immediately.
