Realizing the impact of mass incarceration is bigger than my family's personal story, I decided to advocate for greater change by raising the visibilty of the often overlooked rippling effects of mass incarceration on children and families. The costs of mass incarceration has disproportionately affected the lives of families all across America. Of the 2.2 million people incarcerated in the US nearly 50% are parents. There currently are more than 2.7 million American children with a parent behind bars, and over 5 million minor and adult children in America have been impacted by parental incarceration at some point in their lives. The experience of having a parent in prison is devastatingly traumatizing to children and can have as much impact on a child’s well-being as abuse or domestic violence. That’s why Google partnered with NGO’s that support children of incarcerated parents with the #LoveLetters campaign this past Mothers Day and Fathers Day as a way to convey the enduring bond between a child and their incarcerated parent despite the barrier of prison walls. Understanding this epidemic all too well, I had the wonderful pleasure of producing the #LoveLetters campaign in partnership with Google. Please take a moment to watch and share.
