Even though the labor shortage has given us the ability to fight back against the conditions, we need to cement workers’ rights into law so companies cannot force workers to endure unhealthy conditions again when the tables turn and jobs become short once again.

Strikes like the Great Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902 which gave Americans  higher wages, health and welfare funds, and safer conditions. Unfortunately, unions and the protection they provide declined in the 1970’s and 1980’s. High unemployment in the 1980’s meant that workers were forced to accept lower wages or risk joining the ranks of the unemployed.

Today, employees  live paycheck to paycheck. Rent has skyrocketed while wages have not risen. Despite minimum wage orginal being implemented to being implemented so no full time work would struggle to pay their bills, many need to work multiple jobs to survive.

We have lost the standards of living we gained from the strikes in the early 20th century.

This pattern will repeat itself once again.

America will eventually heal from the worker shortage and one day, corporations will once again have the leverage to exploit workers. We must take advantage of this time to codify these rights into law, so that when corporation try to exploit us once again, employees will be able to take legal action to protect themselves. We need to cement our rights into law.
