SIVs Left Behind

The Issue

The Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program was created by Congress to provide permanent protection to Afghans affiliated with U.S. missions such as translators and interpreters. Those eligible can apply for a visa for themselves, as well as for their spouse and any unmarried children under 21.

At least 263,000 Afghan civilians have been affiliated with the U.S. mission and tens of thousands are eligible for SIVs. Still, only 16,000 Afghan SIVs have been issued since 2014. There are currently more than 18,000 applications in the pipeline.

Biden administration started the evacuation of US citizens and Afghan allies including Special Immigrant Visa holders from Afghanistan and the Department of State and the Department of Defense were providing updates on number of evacuees on daily basis.

As per the latest numbers provided by Department of State more than 100,000 civilians were evacuated from Afghanistan but the question is, how many of these evacuees were SIVs and Afghan allies who risked their lives and worked with USG shoulder to shoulder.

I personally know hundreds of SIVs including me and my colleagues whom were not admitted at the airport by US marines during the evacuations and we have observed that thousands of ordinary civilians including shopkeepers whose stores were next to the airport, members of the security forces who abandoned their posts there and employees of Kam Air, an Afghan airline without any documents and security screening and vetting were relocated to United States by US air force, these civilians are neither eligible nor have any documents and didn't pass any security vetting, they just forced their way into airport while Afghan allies with more than enough documents were denied to enter the airport.

Biden administration and the US government should answer why SIVs and allies with enough documents were stranded while thousands of undocumented civilians with no affiliations with US government were relocated to United States.

We SIVs left behind urge the United States Senate and United States Congress to hold the Biden administration responsible for the mismanagement of the evacuation and endangering the lives of Afghan allies specially SIVs.

We ask the United States Government to honor it's promise to those who risked their lives for 20 years alongside US government and US forces and take the following measures immediately:

1. To provide safe border crossing from Afghanistan to third countries for SIVs.

2. To set up camps and other facilities to house SIVs in third countries.

3. To expedite the SIVs process and to relocate SIVs to United States as soon as process is complete.

4. To provide a break down of the evacuees and justify why undocumented civilians with no screening and vetting were allowed entry into US.
