Elected representatives in all local, state, and federal positions are supposed to represent their constituents. How can they accurately represent us on important issues like income inequality, healthcare, social security, and retirement when they do not have the same problems we, the people, have? If you want to represent us in these matters, maybe it's time you join us in our struggles. This petition outlines the steps to make sure our representatives will stand up for us by putting them in the same sinking ship as the rest of us. 1) Elected officials will now be paid an annual salary not to exceed the average of the constituents they represent. All adults 18 or older, including the unemployed, will be included when calculating this average. Therefore making the representative actively involved in supplying employment opportunities and a living wage to everyone they represent. 2) Elected officials will no longer receive free health care as a bonus,  they can pay for it out of their modest salaries like the rest of us. 3) All current retirement being paid to former representatives will cease. They will pay in to social security and draw from the same fund as the rest of us. If this had been the case from the beginning, social security would not be in its current predicament.  4) All elected officials will be expected to follow laws and accept sentences from criminal activity as if they were common citizens. (For example, the 15 month sentence for child molestation handed to the former speaker who said himself, "child molesters should be in prison for life.") 5) These effects may not be changed or repealed by anyone who would directly benefit from said changes. If we can't vote to be given raises, then neither should you. You want to work for the people, then you need to come to us when you think you deserve a raise. If enough people press for this type of legislation and vote against representatives that oppose it, we can make this happen. Make the politicians represent us again instead of their own self interests.
