Rebecca Faust started this petition to President of the United States and

Dear Mr. President, Madam Vice President, Senators, Congresspeople:

Please note the following facts:

1) The current U.S.A. federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour.

2) Historically, the minimum wage (adjusted for inflation) has been worth the equivalent of up to $11.55 in 2018 currency (in 1968, see here: https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2019/business/us-minimum-wage-by-year/index.html).

3) In order to earn the poverty-line for two people, one person (for instance a single mother with one child), would need to earn $8.38 full-time. (This is based on poverty level $17,420 for two people, 52 weeks, 40 hours, 12 months.) Note that this is over a $1 above minimum wage!

4) SSI (which covers low-income people with disabilities, in part) gives a single individual without an essential person up to $794/month. This would be equivalent to full-time approx. $4.58/hour. Note that this income is non-taxable, however. (Note from Rebecca Faust, author-petitioner, I am an SSI recipient.)

We request that the following policies be adopted into law:

Firstly, raise minimum wage to at least $12/hour, effective January 1, 2022.

Secondly, eliminate federal subminimum wage for workers with disabilities.

Thirdly, increase SSI to $1,664/month maximum per individual, with corresponding rates for couples and essential persons, effective January 2022. (This is based on 80% of the proposed $12 pre-tax minimum wage, full-time. If a higher minimum wage is adopted, please consider an appropriate increase to SSI also.)

Fourthly, increase countable assets cap for SSI to at least the equivalent of 2.5 months maximum individual payments. E.g. $1664 times 2.5 would equal $4,160. Possibly allow SSI recipients to use the same cap for countable assets when applying for, and receiving, other welfare services. (Current countable assets cap to receive SSI is $2,000.)

Fifthly, beginning with the year 2023 rates, adjust SSI rates and minimum wage annually for inflation (or something along those lines at least). (SSI is subject to some sort of annual adjustments now.)

Thank-you.
